And Some Other Stuff: No one's specific about what chemical Clyde used to make the lethal injection more painful (although the Body Horror that it creates implies that it's some sort of acid). He also goes to great lengths to ensure that Darby stays alive as long as possible he places tourniquets on Darby's arms and legs so he doesn't bleed out, administers a saline drip so he doesn't die of dehydration, injects him with adrenaline so he doesn't pass out, and inserts a mouthpiece to prevent him choking on his own tongue. And I Must Scream: Clyde injects Darby with a paralyzing neurotoxin that keeps him helpless but fully conscious and entirely capable of feeling everything Clyde does to him (see below). As the dominoes start falling, Rice wants to find out how Shelton keeps pulling off his plan. After he turns down a deal, however, Shelton initiates a plan designed to bring down Rice, his fellow prosecutors, and the justice system itself. Rice has Shelton arrested for the acts, and Shelton appears interested in a plea bargain of his own. Ten years later, Ames's execution goes awry and the police find Darby dead. Prosecutor Nick Rice (Foxx) only has circumstancial evidence on Darby, who commited the murders, so he gives him a sweet plea bargain in exchange for testimony against the less-guilty Ames (who receives the death penalty) against Clyde's wishes. Gary Gray and starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx as people on opposing sides of a justice system gone wrong.Ĭlyde Shelton (Butler), a talented engineer and family man, watches his life fall apart before his eyes when thugs Clarence Darby (Christian Stolte) and Rupert Ames ( Josh Stewart) break into his house, which results in the death of his wife and child right in front of him. Law Abiding Citizen is never dull and Butler will probably never be this memorably mad again, but the film is just too unreal to be regarded as anything other than ‘leave the brain off’, trashy entertainment.Law Abiding Citizen is a 2009 crime film directed by F.

The ending, though, is very good and a perfect way for Clyde to bow out.

The final twist comes as a surprise but it really tries the audience’s patience with its out-and-out craziness. Late developments do put you slightly on edge but the film becomes more and more daft. In one sequence, parallel editing is used between an execution and Nick’s daughter’s cello recital.Ī blood-covered Butler is one of the more powerful images of 2009 and there is a terrific jump scare involving a mobile phone, but the violence is unnecessarily full-on at times.Ĭlyde’s ‘powers’ over Nick and his colleagues verge on the supernatural and it’s hard to suspend your disbelief. There is something quite nasty about this film, with blood, gore, severed limbs and explosions mixed with family scenes and the odd laugh. Irishman Colm Meaney provides sarcasm and a laugh or two as Detective Dunnigan but Leslie Bibb, as Nick’s apprentice Sarah, suffers from being lumbered with a pretty pointless character.įorget a calm build-up as the movie starts with a real gut-punch sequence and it paints a grim portrait of the US justice system. He inevitably suffers when compared to the screen-hogging Butler. albeit the hammy Lector from the Silence of the Lambs sequels.įoxx hasn’t had the best year (The Soloist) and is a little dull and one-dimensional. Clyde is like a mix of Saw’s Jigsaw and Hannibal Lector. He is funny, menacing and slightly camp as he chews asparagus and scenery. Gary Gray has a background in pumping action featuring a face-off between two actors with The Negotiator but this film is nowhere near as classy.Īfter the hideous Gamer a few months ago, Butler contributes one of the year’s most memorable, yet bizarre, performances. Violence rules the way and there aren’t so much plot holes as plot chasms.ĭirector F. It is equally silly, OTT and entertaining. Clyde’s vengeance threatens both Nick and the whole city of Philadelphia. The killers escaped with little-to-no punishment and the main target of Clyde’s wrath is assistant district attorney Nick Rice (played by Jamie Foxx) who prosecuted the case. LAW Abiding Citizen stars Gerard Butler as Clyde Shelton, a man seeking revenge against the American justice system after the murder of his wife and daughter 10 years earlier.
